Disposed plastics have high visibility potential – they often stay afloat, are easily blown around with the wind – and are in wide use due to their material properties – they hold moisture, are light but durable, they are easy to manufacture – and because of that, during manufacturing process and transportation are more environmentally friendly than other substrates that could replace them – such as metal, glass or paper. Environmental sustainability and consumer convenience are two major and opposing trends today. Consumers don’t have the time to grow and prepare their foods – they need solutions that get them fed healthy food quickly so they can go on doing other things. There is no silver bullet to resolve the plastic waste issues – at present improving recycling is a key factor to resolving the crowded landfills and polluted oceans. There are a many organizations that are addressing recycling – most notable are Recycling Partnership and Associations of Plastic Recyclers (APR). The Partnership is working on increasing access to recycling – and APR is working with their members on improving recycling rates and recycling processes. Many consumer brands have aligned themselves with The Recycling Partnership funding access to recycling for municipalities that do not offer it – there are huge opportunities to grow recycling access in the US – only 59% of US households have curbside recycling!
