Inline Plastics Playbook v2 JUL-21

Some of our competitors have chosen to allocate the post consumer content to a specific product line. Doing this is easy to increase the amount claimed. Today the world overall recycles 9% of consumer plastics. If everyone used recycled materials, we would be able to get 9% back to our supply streams. This percentage tilts heavily in favor of PET bottle makers – because they produce the plastic bottles which are most commonly recycled, they also get most of the recycled content – you may notice that many water bottles claim 100% recycled content. These materials come from the 9% of overall plastics mentioned before. As such, it is not easy to acquire large quantities of post-consumer recycled PET. Inline has committed to ramp up the post-consumer recycled content to 10% by end of 2020, with the goal to increase this percentage annually. Since we depend on output of recyclers, it is difficult currently to commit to a specific incremental %. It is important to note that many consumer brands have made commitments that will not be achievable due to lack of recycled materials (some of them already changed their commitments – others will follow soon). Recycling and consumer education about how to handle recyclables is and will continue to be a major opportunity to resolve this major worldwide issue. We recognize that the tear strip adds a third component once the package is opened. However, we feel the value far outweighs the chance the strip doesn’t get thrown into the recycling bin along with the full container and lid. Its value is to clearly show consumers that someone has not tampered with the package. Some of our competitors have integrated the frangible hinge with the package – we tested both, the competitor’s and our’s with consumers – the response was – ‘I can’t see if someone tampered with these containers (competitors) – but I can clearly see it on this one (Inline)’. They also liked how intuitive the tear strip and the sound it made when being removed was for them.
