OBJECTION
BEST ANSWER
Many people do. But paper comes with its own set of issues. First – to get paper, we need to cut trees impacting the very source we need to live – oxygen. When it comes to usage- there are further challenges – to package ingredients that are not completely dry, or foods that require more moisture or oxygen protection, paperboard needs to be coated – and coating is usually made with additives and materials that are not recyclable. And in some cases – chemicals that are not safe for human consumption. You must have heard about PFAS* and the impact on humans as well as the destructive properties in the environment. Furthermore – oil stains on cardboard boxes make the cardboard non-recyclable. So many experts know that paperboard really doesn’t deserve to be called ‘greener’ when it comes to food packaging. Inline has been focusing on the environment for over a decade. Our first step was switching from non-recyclable OPS to recyclable DPET in the mid- 2000s. Our DPET manufacturing process is an innovation that makes crystal clear PET sheet with a process that removes 5 energy intensive steps from the manufacturing process – saving 68% of the carbon footprint compared to traditional PET. Earlier this year we have added post consumer content to all our products, utilizing the same DPET process – it is called rDPET. Have you heard of ‘reborn’? Starting with 10% of post consumer content in 2020, our goal is to increase this percentage as more post consumer material becomes available. We are active in different fields of environmental sustainability. We work with consumers to understand their habits, perceptions and challenges when it comes to handling packaging recyclables. Through extensive consumer research we have learned that consumers are not sure what is recyclable and what isn’t – to make their lives easier we have started adding ‘Please recycle me’ to all our packaging – making it clear that our products, when used and reused – should be placed in the recycling bin. We have organized beaches and park cleaning activities for employees and are working with leading organizations in the recycling industry to stay abreast of the recycling challenges and trends which we apply in our product management – ensuring our products are designed for recycling. And finally - our entire Connecticut headquarters and manufacturing facility is covered with over 2600 solar panels, helping power our machines that produce your products.
